bobby and pigpen where kicked out of the band a few times in the fall of 68 for reasons i can't remember.i think david gans has the info on it.just google david gans and search some of his written articles.if i remember correctly it had to do with both guys musical chops at the time, hence the mickey and heartbeat shows and the other gigs.

Jerry and Phil both felt that Bobby and Pig weren't keeping up with the amazing musical leaps they were making. C.M.'s note mentions only that Pig is absent, but since the Heartbeat shows are from around this time, either Pig was "fired" or he was ticked off and didn't show up. The story on the firing is that it was never quite "official," and more a discussion than an act. Note how much Bobby progresses during the next few months. I think he managed to "catch up." As to Pig, Phil mentions that he and Jerry quickly realized that Pig was the grounding wire to their electrical voyages--that he was the meat on the bone.

As to that "repetitive organ riff" on earlier Dark Stars, T.C. was playing in the band from the birth of "Star." Those repetitions are his and not Pig's. Pig played percussion on D.S.

Yes I also read somewhere Bobby up to this point wasn't practicing very much, which is what Ghost is saying. This annoyed Phil and Jer to no end and big reason for the "firing". Weir didn't seem interested in becoming better.

Other thing I read was Jer and Phil never told Pig and Bob about the Mickey and the Hartbeat gigs and thats how they came to realize they were "fired" by hearing about the Heartbeat shows the next day.
